The Energy We Send Out

Sojong Reminder from Anam Thubten 10/21

Dear Dharma friends,

The interconnectedness of human beings has many dimensions, some of which are not palpable to the mundane mind. There’s an energy field within which we’re all connected and have a mutual impact on each other. This is not easy to recognize until awareness is developed through meditation practice. Naturally, once such recognition is present, we become more conscious of the energy we’re putting out into the world. We can then have a more positive impact on those in our environment.

Maybe you’ve noticed that sometimes there is an inexplicable unpleasantness, or an energetic contraction, when you’re having an otherwise ordinary interaction with someone. Perhaps that person might be lost in negative thoughts and emotions, like worry, fear, or anger. Without a word about his or her internal state, you can sometimes feel that you’re being impacted by their experience. Of course, the reverse is also true. When you’re in the presence of others, people are being impacted by your thoughts and emotions as well. No doubt, there are also some people who’ve developed such equanimity that they won’t easily be subject to what goes on inside of you.

There are stories of saints and spiritual masters who exude so much love and joy that even wild beasts relax by bathing in such grace. In essence, whatever is occurring inside of us can create an energetic field in which others are affected. Our awareness, serenity, and loving kindness can bring a host of goodness and benevolence to everyone around us without our “doing” anything. This reality becomes more and more clear as our awareness develops. By keeping this in mind, we’ll naturally feel inspired to be in a positive state of mind when others - like friends, family members, and even strangers at the grocery store - are around. This is a powerful way to help the world. It makes one an unsung heroine. This is the Bodhisattava’s practice.

During this Sojong, we might like to reflect on how we interact with the world, and hold the intention to bring more positive energy wherever we go. May everyone be well.

With palms joined,
Anam Thubten
